Sarah’s Approach to Iyengar-Based Yoga

Sarah’s Approach to Iyengar-Based Yoga
Based on the teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar, author of Light on Yoga, Light on Pranayama, and Light on Life, this method emphasizes principles of physical alignment of the body and basic movement principles to help see and understand the body, and helps to develop body awareness, strength, and flexibility. It is a style of yoga that can be practiced through the lifespan and represents a philosophy of living.

This method encourages students to discover what is possible with a long-term developmental approach to yoga (i.e. small changes over time, working from where we are each time we practice). Intermediate and advanced studies do not necessarily reflect doing “harder” poses, but instead being able to feel more deeply how the pose is working in the body, and how changing the sequencing of asana (yoga postures) changes these body feelings.

A Typical Iyengar-Based Class
Using the methodology of international yoga master, B.K.S. Iyengar, classes will use the aid of several props such as blocks, belts, blankets, bolsters, in order to assist students to work with their unique body and circumstances. Often a theme or intention will be discussed at the start of class to give students an overview for each class.

Typically class time will focus on anatomy, alignment and movement cues (gravity lines, equal and opposites, kinesiology), energetic/breath awareness, and relaxation in working through a carefully sequenced yoga practice. Classes typically begin with relaxation postures to center and find the breath at the beginning of class and to allow time for integration of the practice at the end.

It is hoped that in practicing this style of yoga that you become the authority on your own yoga practice by developing a working knowledge of the inner-body (i.e., what is right for you). This is hoped to allow students to work in a way that is safe, healthy, and vibrant way preparing the body to move into more challenging poses safely and over time.
